Richard Wetherill

The Wetherill brothers at Alamo Ranch circa 1893.
(Left to right) Al, Win, Richard, Clayton, and John.

Originally from Missouri, Benjamin Wetherill and his family moved west, lured by the tales of rich silver deposits in Colorado.  Finding little success in the mining camp of Rico, they worked a ranch in Utah until a torrential rain washed their buildings away.  Discouraged but unbeaten, the family headed back towards the east and ended up in the Mancos Valley where they homesteaded the "Alamo ranch" raising wheat, oats, and cattle.
